The Internet is broken. It’s been broken for many years now. But somehow, we didn't notice when it happened. The old web was imperfect and sometimes ugly but also undeniably human… Unpolished blogs, forums, webpages, and videos… it all slowly slipped away into something completely unrecognizable.

Even years before the big AI boom, corporations and professional influencers already colonized the Internet. “Slop” is the junk food of the Internet. Easy to make, gets views fast, and provides no real value. Only a cheap dopamine rush in the moment and quickly forgotten. This is the engine that runs social media.

Those who actually put time and effort into making something good get buried and punished for it. Effort can’t compete with endless slop.

Post AI, slop is out of control online. Facebook, Pinterest, Instagram, YouTube and more. Social media and search engines are being swamped with AI-generated spam.

AI slop and human made slop are the same: bland, repetitive, and bloated. Human slop is so algorithmic at this point that a bot can copy it exactly. And this isn’t because AI is “smart” or “skilled”.

Yes, AI can “be original” in a way. It can arrange text and images in ways that have never been done before. But AI can't be meaningfully original in the same way we can. We humans, unlike AI, have our own thoughts and feelings we bring to the table. AI doesn’t.

Because AI is a zombie. It looks and seems human from far away. But then you get closer and notice something isn’t quite right. AI is only roughly human shaped from a distance.

We hate this deception because it violates our trust on a deep level. What can we believe if we can’t even trust our own eyes anymore? But tech companies are doing nothing to stop this mass AI deception. There's just too much money to be made from this right now!

Every year, slop slowly crept on us, like a frog being boiled in a hot soup. Then AI exploded and blew open a nasty secret; the popular internet has been mostly useless junk for many years now.

Money ruined the Internet, not AI. AI is just finishing the job. With AI, the view based model will collapse. Why would anyone spend money to advertise to bots? Do bots have jobs or need to eat? The Internet can never be the same again.

AI is the cool new thing right now, but the novelty is fading quickly. We are getting sick and tired of both AI and human slop fast. The Internet is getting more boring every year. Will the Internet as we know it go extinct?

Probably not soon, but we will change how we use the Internet. I always used to have YouTube slop running in the background. Whether it be latest pointless Internet drama or a pseudo-intellectual video essay about how Paw Patrol is secretly capitalist propaganda. Even back then I knew I was wasting my time with this stupid garbage.

But… one day the slop lost its pull on me. Now I spend my time on things that are more worth it to me. Life is too short to be wasted.

Maybe we will scroll less, or find better corners of the Internet.

Maybe AI is the reset button the Internet needed.
